Old Days to New Ways: Featuring Kelly M.

Hello Homes is #blessed to have seriously amazing clients.  On top of just being great people, some of them are also super handy! In this series, we are showcasing a client that saw the potential in their space and took advantage of it.  Let’s begin…

Kelly M. knew that downtown was where she HAD to be.  Thus, our search began.  After looking at a few different buildings, she narrowed her search on the infamous Union Square.  Character, size, location, and price all aligned with her vision.  When we listed the unit that is now hers, she knew she had to act fast. After only a handful of days on the market, Kelly submitted an offer and a month later, she was the proud new owner.

AFTER PHOTOS AND INTERVIEW WITH KELLY M.

HH: What was the one thing that drew you to this condo?

K.M: There were way more than just one! This history of the building was what first drew me in. Then, once I saw the actual unit, it was the openness of the whole place- the high ceilings and the 15 foot windows blew me away. And the spiral staircase of course!

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 4.14.58 PM

HH: What was one thing you couldn’t wait to change?

K.M: The countertops! And the carpeting in the loft upstairs.

Condo After

HH: What piece of your remodel do your guests love the most?

K.M: Definitely the mural. I’m not sure if it’s considered a “remodel” but it’s certainly the piece in the unit with the most character.

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 4.14.47 PM

HH: What projects were DIY and what did you hire a contractor for?

K.M: I ripped up the carpet in the loft and laid hardwood, painted a few walls, and tiled the kitchen backsplash myself. The only thing I hired out was the countertops and the mural.

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 4.15.25 PM

HH: Where do you enjoy spending most of your time in your new remodel?

K.M: In the living room/kitchen area. It’s so open and my view of the Westside is the best.

Hot List: Bloody Marys!

We love a good brunch here at Hello Homes, and what makes a weekend brunch so awesome? Bloody Marys! We put together a list of our favorites in downtown GR.

Birch Lodge

Commonly known to regulars as “Church at the Birch,” the brunch special offers an awesome (and cheap) Bloody Mary bar, plus access to their free taco bar with the order of a drink! Be sure to beat the rush – this place fills up fast.

The Green Well

The fixings vary in the Green Well Pubby Mary but it is always delicious. You can expect the bartender to include smoked cheese, olives, pickled veggies, and more. Plus, it’s served with a side car of Michigan beer!Screen Shot 2016-01-21 at 6.35.31 PM

Stella’s

The weekend Rehab Brunch at Stella’s is sure to nurse you back to health, and their Bloody Mary bar doesn’t disappoint. Look for a variety of infused vodkas made in-house!

GRBC

Stop by Grand Rapids Brewing Company on the weekends for a Bloody Mary bar that offers a variety of fixings including stuffed olives, pickle juice, and sausage! It’s a meal in itself.

Donkey

If you’re up for something a little adventurous to liven up your weekend try the Bloody Maria at Donkey, which is made with tequila instead of vodka. Their Mexican brunch menu is delicious too!

If you can’t stand the thought of tomato juice and vodka, we recommend heading over to Maru to build your own Mimosa. They offer a great variety of fruit and juices to go with your champagne.

Cheers!

Hot List: Coffee!

Winter has officially arrived! There are few things the Hello Homes team loves more than a warm cup of coffee (Ok, maybe more than one some days). Where do we go to get our favorite cup of joe? Our HOT LIST will lead the way. Maybe we will see you there!

The Sparrows

This Eastown staple has quirky names on its menu (The Ex-Boyfriend is my personal fave), a chill vibe, and doesn’t break the bank. Also, the windows are always mysteriously steamy so there MUST be something warm going on there.

LanternLantern Coffee Bar and Lounge

Lantern is fairly new to the GR coffee scene but you wouldn’t know it by the taste. They make delicious cups of coffee and tea and are centrally located in the Heartside district of downtown. Wood tables and chairs give this place a relaxed and trendy feeling, perfect for casual or business meetings. It is a unique space because most of the seating is found on the lower level, which gives it a cozy, “underground” feel. And, they support local art!

Madcap Coffee

If you don’t know Madcap, then allow us to officially rock your coffee world! Madcap is everything a coffee shop should be with floor-to-ceiling windows, music, concrete tables, and one-of-a-kind drinks. They offer exotic teas, exquisite pour-over coffee, and a fresh, private coffee label with numerous types of blends. Madcap isn’t where you go to get a grande-double-no whip-skinny-hazelnut-without water-extra foam latte. No. This is REAL coffee. You’ll thank us later (preferably in Madcap gift cards).

Mayan Buzz Cafe

We like to think of Mayan Buzz as our little secret, but we know that won’t be true for long. Slightly hidden on Grandville Ave, this place has an extensive menu and it truly offers the flavor you crave without the high price tag. Plus, there’s a huge concrete fireplace and comfy furniture. Before you know it, one hour turns into a whole morning of productive-ness… and coffee. Or facebook-ing…. and coffee. Whatever you prefer to call it!

There you have it! You can often find us setting up shop at one of these exceptional establishments to get some work done. Give them a try! You don’t be disappointed.

Honorable Mention: Rowster New American Coffee, Clique Coffee Bar, The Bitter End Coffeehouse, Starbucks in the Amway Grand Plaza

How to Enjoy the Last Days of 2015 in Grand Rapids

It is not uncommon to have a whirlwind of holiday family, friend, and work obligations to make the last several days of the year blend together into a slightly hazy mix of tinsel and tins of cookies. Here are some relaxing things you can do in Grand Rapids before the year is over to have a few final pleasant
memories of 2015.

  • Take a Carriage Ride through downtown Grand Rapids to Rosa Parks Circle Treesee all the lights and the beautiful tree!
  • Ice Skate at Rosa Parks Circle (weather dependent).
  • Take a Tour of Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World at Frederik Meijer Gardens.
  • Hike the Blandfold Nature Trail (this is a little more magical with a fresh coat of snow on the ground).
  • Stay toasty by the fire while overlooking the lake and enjoying a drink or meal at Rose’s or Bostwick Lake Inn.
  • Check out the Holiday Planetarium Show at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
  • Take an evening drive to tour a few of Grand Rapids many beautiful neighborhoods to see their light displays (hopefully everyone has power by now). Pick up some ice cream from Furniture City Creamery or some coffee from Rowster to make the drive a little more cozy.

Please let us know if you have any other helpful suggestions. Whatever you end up doing with the end of your year, please enjoy them and be safe! Happy Holidays!
